This just means that moderns have a problem with perspective. Our idea of appropriate pacing is too narrow; it needs to be expanded to include subtle discussions and loving descriptions. But this does not mean that modern readers need to tolerate inefficient time management. Detours worth taking are allowed; foot-dragging is never acceptable."
